How Disney's "Frozen" Is Burning with Real Love

Why is it that we can easily celebrate sacrificial love and be swooned by grand, selfless gestures motivated by love when it’s in our favorite movie, even animated movie? We sigh and our heart-eyes dream about someone swooping in and winning our hearts the same way. We want something that makes our hearts melt like Olaf when he’s next to the fireplace.

Our beloved Anna shared her youthful joy with us and our hearts were already soft to our bouncy red-head, but when she positioned her frozen body in front of Elsa before Hans attempted a royal murder, we really loved her. Some of us probably put our hands in front of our eyes not wanting to watch, some tears probably escaped our eyes, and our hearts were unified in pounding, NOT wanting the sword to take our princess. She didn’t deserve it.

Sacrificial love. Our princess sacrificed herself for her sister Elsa, whom did not “deserve” such an act of love after ignoring her throughout the movie and dismissing their relationship out of fear. But perfect love cast out fear (1 John 4:18) in this climactic scene.

Now we know that Anna did not die, by the grace of the happy ending fairies of Disney, but Anna didn’t know she wouldn’t die — either by freezing to death, or by sword — and THAT is a reflection of perfect love.

Still dreaming that someone would woo you with a grand, selfless act of love? Jesus died so that we might live and choose to love him. We’re living a perfect love story, one that makes our hearts pound, our eyes release tears, and one we almost don’t want to watch because he didn’t deserve it. To die. But he still chose to. He proved victorious and his lungs filled with air and he lived again.

Could it be true that we all desire a love so strong and a story so moving? One that we write fictional characters to illustrate because we can’t even comprehend that it might be possible that we have already been invited into that very love.
